What to do with a financial-aid lump sum
Aid hits in a chunk. Rent and books do not. Split the deposit the same day so “safe to spend” is a real number.
Same-day split (example $2,400 refund)
| Bucket | Amount | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Rent / housing | $900 | Due before the vibe money |
| Food + transit | $400 | 4–6 weeks |
| Books / fees / tools | $250 | Actual school costs |
| Buffer | $350 | The week aid is late next term |
| Safe to spend | $500 | Only this is fun money |
The formula
Safe to spend = deposit − rent − required school costs − 1 month basics − buffer.
Do this in Wage Gauge
- Add the deposit as income (label: aid / refund).
- Add rent and books as bills due this cycle.
- Read “safe to spend.” If it is $0, that is the answer.
